Welcome to the Woodley & Whitegates Liberal Democrats website

Coming soon to a screen near you….

Last week the Wokingham Borough Council Meeting was filmed for the first time. And there were no first night nerves as Wokingham’s Lib Dems welcomed open and transparent democracy.

Cllr Prue Bray, Leader of Wokingham’s Lib Dems said “There were more people than could fit in the public gallery so it was a good job the meeting was filmed as there was obviously a lot of interest in the Agenda items such as the Elms Field update. It’s great to see so many people there interested and involved in local democracy, particularly representatives of the Borough’s youth who came to present a petition from Woodley.

“It would be a shame for residents to miss out on what happens as local decision making takes place in the Council chamber and it will be interesting to see how filming might help include or even inspire more people.”

Lib Dems file objection to Wokingham Conservatives’ plans for housing around Carnival Pool

The Leader of the Lib Dem Group at Wokingham Borough Council, Prue Bray has put in a formal objection to the Conservatives’ plans for housing on the area around Carnival Pool in Wokingham.

The idea of including housing in a revamp of the area around Carnival Pool was slipped in to the latest draft of Wokingham Borough Council’s planning policy in June, without any public consultation or discussion. The Council has an existing masterplan for the town which reserves the land for leisure use.

Prue Bray says “We did know that the Conservatives are planning to build a multi-storey car park at the swimming pool, but they have never mentioned any possibility of building houses around there before. They have just sneaked it in at almost the final stage of preparing the Council’s planning policy. We don’t know how many houses or how much of the site they want to use. No developer could casually ask for an extra housing site and expect to get away with it. So why does the council think it should be allowed to do it itself? It is bad enough that they want to build houses on the green space at Elms Field. Now they are moving on to Carnival Pool. They are supposed to be running Council services, but it seems they would rather be property developers instead.”

LIB DEM PUPIL PREMIUM PROVIDES A BACK-TO-SCHOOL BOOST

As the new school year begins, pupils in Wokingham Borough will benefit from more than £2 million extra on top of schools budgets, thanks to the Liberal Democrat pupil premium.

Cllr Beth Rowland (South Lake ward) said:

“The pupil premium helps provide extra support for the children who need it most, and helping the most disadvantaged children helps every child. Fewer children falling behind means less disruption in class and a better education for everyone. This pupil premium boost will help all Wokingham Borough’s children as schools can spend the money in ways they feel helps their pupils best.

“In April this year, Wokingham was named as the Authority with the worst gap in attainment between children who are eligible for the Pupil Premium and those who are not. Wokingham’s Lib Dems will continue to challenging the Conservatives to improve the performance of Wokingham’s schools so that children from less well-off back grounds get a fairer chance to succeed in life.”
