At last night’s council meeting, Liberal Democrat councillors expressed grave concerns that the Conservative Council has been too slow in coming up with measures to alleviate flooding in the Borough and said this lack of action has let local residents down.
Cllr Tom McCann said “By not fixing the roof while the sun was shining the Conservatives have failed us all. They have failed to implement any real flood prevention and mitigation measures although they have known about key at flood risk areas like the showcase cinema roundabout and surrounding area. The Budget for this coming financial year was set after this winters flooding but did not include any extra funding for flood prevention -yet another missed opportunity.”
Cllr Prue Bray leader of the Lib Dems added “The Conservative motion, whilst welcome, is too little too late. The Council commissioned a report on flooding as long ago as 2001. A new flood risk management strategy was finally due to go the Executive in January this year but still hasn’t appeared. If the Conservatives hadn’t been so slow to make decisions and take action, the impact of this winter’s flooding would not have been as bad. We urge the Conservatives to stop talking and do something to end this predictable misery for local residents.”
