Lib-Dems voice residents’ anger and concern with Wokingham Borough traffic chaos

Liberal Democrat councillors last night voiced residents’ anger and concern with the high number of road works that have been poorly planned and which are causing unnecessary traffic chaos throughout the Borough. The Lib Dems called on the Conservative Council to commit to do better managing future road works: to plan better and to communicate better.

Discussions centred around the recent works on the A329(M) which led to long queues of frustrated motorists thanks to poor planning and a lack of advance warning. These works were to prepare for a bigger piece of work on the A329(M) next year.

But Cllr Tom McCann (Loddon ward) noted with disgust that “The Conservatives simply refused to listen. They even laughed at the examples of dreadful journeys and the frustration and impact on individuals and businesses. The Conservatives refused to accept they had anything to learn and were so arrogant they voted against trying to improve management of borough road works. ”

Leader of the Lib Dems, Cllr Prue Bray pointed out that road-works problems are a continuing Borough-wide issue. She said “There are lots of examples such as Winnersh crossroads, temporary traffic lights at Loddon Bridge Road and Sonning Bridge works. I am furious that the Conservatives have refused to accept they need to improve.”

Cllr McCann has vowed to scrutinise the plans for the A329(M) viaduct repairs that are due to take place next year. He said “The Conservatives have let people down. Residents deserve so much better than this. Lib Dems will continue to listen to residents’ concerns and suggestions on this issue of managing road works. The Lib Dems will find out what is being planned for the A329(M) next year and will make sure residents across the Borough know.”

In more detail:

1/ At the Wokingham Borough Council Meeting 21st November, Liberal Democrat Cllr Tom McCann proposed the motion: This council resolves to learn from the fiasco in October when contraflow works on the A329(M) resulted in severe traffic chaos across the Borough. The Council resolves to ensure that excellent communication and effective planning will always be a part of the process for all future major highways work.

2/There was a named vote on the motion and details of this will be published in the minutes of the 21st November Council Meeting on the Wokingham Borough Council website.
